    5. Conclusion
    Molecular predictors of recurrence in head and neck/ oral cancer are essential for accurate prognostication; given the recent evidences that affirm the drug resistant and tumorigenic properties of cancer stem cells, investigating the utility of markers specifying them is a significant approach. Identification of cancer stem cell markers that are associated with recurrence is a prelude to establish their predictive utility for clinical application, subject to validation in large prospective clinical studies. This study is an initial effort that attempts to approach the prognostication of oral cancer with a cancer stem cell perspective and the markers identified could be candidate predictors of disease out-come.

    A. mRNA expression analysis of markers in buccal mucosa cancer patients. Median expression of NQO1 and CDK1 in recurrent patients were high in than non-recurrent patients. Significant correlation of CDK1 and NQO1 with disease free survival in buccal mucosa cancer patients. E. The co-relation of markers with histology showed that patients with CDK1high or NQO1high and severe pathological features had higher recurrence rates than patients with CDK1low expression and no severe histological features (p < 0.05). Patients with high CDK1 expression and negative histology also showed more recurrence although not statistically significant.
